How economic events move currency rates

Economic releases are the heartbeat of the currency market. Each scheduled report is published with an actual value, a consensus forecast and the previous reading. The market has already priced in the forecast, so the reaction comes from the surprise β€” the gap between actual and forecast. A stronger-than-expected reading tends to support that country's currency; a weaker one tends to weigh on it.

High-importance events (5 stars) such as central-bank rate decisions, inflation and employment reports usually trigger the largest moves. Medium-importance events (around 3.5 stars) matter but are less volatile. The star scale supports half stars, and the filter lets you decide how strict to be β€” from showing everything to only critical 5-star releases.

If a release is about to hit, expect wider spreads and sharper swings. Check our live currency converter for the current rate, the exchange fee calculator before you convert, and the percentage change calculator to measure how far a pair has moved.

Australia economic calendar FAQs

An economic calendar lists scheduled economic releases and events β€” for Australia here β€” such as interest-rate decisions, inflation, employment and GDP reports, with their scheduled time and, once published, the actual, forecast and previous values.

Stars indicate importance on a 1 to 5 scale, including half stars. Higher-star events such as central-bank rate decisions or inflation releases typically move the currency more. Use the star filter to focus on what matters to you.

Currency markets react to expectations versus reality. When a release beats or misses its forecast, traders reprice the currency, which moves pairs like EUR/USD or USD/MAD. That is why medium and high importance events are the ones worth watching.

Times are shown in UTC so they are unambiguous worldwide. Convert to your local time if you are trading or planning an exchange around a release.

Events are fetched server-side from public economic-calendar providers, cached and displayed with their source and last-update time. Values are indicative and can be revised β€” always confirm with the official statistics agency or central bank.
